The list is divided into ten levels and then divided into groups of twenty-five words, based on frequency of use and difficulty. The Fry word list or instant words are widely accepted to contain the most used words in reading and writing. Reading, writing, and building sentences that use common sight words is a great way to increase word recognition and comprehension. Here you’ll find the combined FRY list and individual lists by grade. This is an excellent way to test a variety of skills including reading, word recognition, following instructions, matching, and comprehension. Then, they can practice reading the sentence before illustrating. The words are already in the boxes, so even struggling readers can match them up correctly. On the board, draw sound boxes (a long rectangle divided into two, three, or four squares, depending on the number of sounds in the words you plan to teach). As students add more and more sight words to their memory, they are able to focus their efforts on comprehending the text they are reading. Allow about 10 minutes each day for direct instruction and practice with sight words. This helps to equip our students with the necessary skills to learn to read. As the year goes on, we add more and more sight words to our sight word bank and begin to build up our reading skills. While sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are still learning new words, working on spelling, and improving their reading skills, they’re also starting to engage with words in new ways.
